M.S. in Cybersecurity at The University of Alabama (2023)

Cybersecurity pertains to the prevention of unauthorized or unattended access, destruction, or modification of sensitive data, networks, programs, and other information.

Nowadays, cyber security specialists are of tremendous importance to everyone’s online security, with the virtual world becoming increasingly prevalent.

Computer security specialists ensure that businesses’ computer data is protected by constructing a secure infrastructure and remaining informed about technological advancements.

Therefore, employers are looking for people who can support their businesses with the right kind of talent, and the best way to demonstrate this is through an effective resume objective.

For this reason, an application for a position as a Cybersecurity Specialist will require strong technical skills and advanced education. This demonstrates that you are a talented individual with the ability to deal with competition at this level.

If you are writing your objective, you should include the skills you possess, particularly your computer and security expertise, as well as any unique, relevant skills.

Importance of the MS Cybersecurity Program at The University of Alabama

  • The Master of Science in Cyber-Security (MSSec) program provides a unique combination of theoretical and applied knowledge and focuses on developing the skills required for success in the areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting.
  • The purpose of the program is to increase the pool of high-quality, entry- and advanced-level employees able to protect critical systems that are critical to the US and whose collapse would have devastating effects on our national security and economic system.
  • Furthermore, this program provides current employees in the public and private sectors the opportunity to obtain high-quality training in the core areas of computer forensics, information security management, and forensic accounting, which is intended to facilitate career advancement.
  • Students interact and learn about faculty research during the faculty research seminar in preparation for the culminating thesis or project.

Faculty:

Among the faculty involved in MS Cybersecurity are the departments of Computer Science and Criminal Justice (College of Arts and Sciences) and Management, Information Systems Quantitative Methods, and Accounting & Finance (School of Business).

Degree Requirements:

  • Applicants should hold an accredited, regionally accredited baccalaureate degree (or will graduate soon) from a college or university within the US or from an overseas university.
  • The majority of students admitted to the program have a minimum overall undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • Admissions vetting will be conducted by an admissions committee (the program directors and a minimum of two affiliated faculty members) and recommendations will be made to the UAB Graduate School for admission.

Overview of background requirements:

  • In addition to a variety of science and humanities fields, we accept students from undergraduate programs in criminal justice, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, management and information systems, business, and accounting.
  • It is imperative that you have formal exposure to the core concepts of computer forensics, including undercover activity, cybercrime investigation, IT auditing, forensic accounting, probability and statistics, programming, networking, logic, discrete mathematics, and data security management.
  • The applicant who does not meet this background requirement but meets other admission requirements will be admitted on a contingency basis and will be required to complete a series of prerequisite courses in order to gain the necessary background.

Fees Structure:

Cybersecurity Engineering is a credit-based, self-sustaining master’s program (matriculated and non-matriculated). Citizenship status and residency in Birmingham State do not affect tuition.

The University of Alabama Professional & Continuing Education, a division of U.W. Continuum College, handles payments.

There are 46-49 credits to be completed as part of the program curriculum. The total cost of each quarter varies based on the number of credits each student enrolls in.

A full-time student usually enrolls in 10 credits per quarter and can complete the program between 1.5 and 2 years. A part-time student generally enrolls in 5 credits per quarter and can complete the program between 3-4 year

Conclusion

Increasingly widespread Internet use has made cybersecurity one of the most important needs of the world, bringing to light the dangers that Cybersecurity poses to a nation’s security.

The government is responsible for spreading awareness about the importance of updating your system and network security settings regularly and utilizing proper anti-virus software to keep your system and network secure from malware.

People are also responsible for creating awareness about the need to update their systems and network security settings.

Assessment strategies should take into consideration these challenges, including concentration on fundamental concepts as much as possible, segmenting a field (where possible) into a few specializations, allowing faster updates and requiring periodic certification to maintain competence.
