Application Procedure
- Degree of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) with four years of study.
- Computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, or a closely related field is required for admission.
- Candidates with professional experience after completing a post-baccalaureate degree can be considered (e.g., physics, mathematics, electrical engineering).
- An overall GPA of 3.0 or higher for the last 60 technical semester units, 90 technical units from the previous quarter, or all degree units.
- Bachelor’s degrees (or equivalents) from other countries are acceptable.
- The Personal statement must concisely describe the multi-disciplinary nature of the student’s desired educational study, the credentials necessary to succeed in a graduate program of study, and the career path that the student intends to take upon graduation.
- Graduate students must provide three letters of recommendation (current Tennessee graduate students may submit two letters of recommendation)
- Faculty members at Tennessee must agree to mentor the student’s research.
- Ideally, the remaining letters should come from professors whose previous academic work has been at the student’s most advanced level and who are able to assess the student’s potential for advanced scholarly studies.
- References from family friends and co-workers are not acceptable since they can’t fairly assess your academic abilities.

Please Note: In order to create a multi-disciplinary program of study and research focus, it is necessary for applications to work with faculty in disciplines of interest within the University of Tennessee before applying to the program.
There must be two letters of recommendation written by former Tennessee university faculty members committed to advising the student’s research (one committee chair and one committee member).
